Transforming our understanding of the UK’s energy system
The national Smart Energy Data Service (SENSE) unlocks unprecedented insights from smart energy data to help researchers turn studies into solutions to socio-economic energy challenges. We are a part of the Smart Data Research UK family of data services.
What is it we do?
We give researchers access to key datasets
We acquire, steward and enable safe access for academics to key data sets that will help them undertaking ground-breaking research to accelerated Net Zero.
We foster new and innovative research collaborations
We have built a user-friendly platform where the data can be accessed to enable new and innovative research.
We have active researchers across disciplines, tackling complex problems using our data.
We ensure responsible use of data
We ensure that the data is always used responsibly, including ensuring the highest standards of data ethics and measures to safeguard public trust.
To keep data safe, we adhere to the Five Safes model developed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Our themes
Energy behaviours and efficiency
The SENSE research team will examine how societal behaviours impact energy use in public and commercial buildings, enabling more effective energy management and tax funds to be spent on vital public services rather than on unnecessary energy bills.
Equitable EV Charging
SENSE will unlock the power of smart data to enable equitable access to EV charging infrastructure. It will combine smart EV journey data with energy network data and the distribution of existing EV public charge points.
